    Determining the Value of Your RV: A Step-by-Step Guide

    So, you’ve decided to sell your RV, or you’re shopping for a change. It was bound to happen. It’s even exciting. Just like buying a car or truck, RV purchases are rarely for forever, and each one usually reflects a chapter of our lives. But when that day comes, how can you figure out the exact value of your RV?

    Well, glad you asked. Determining the value of your RV basically comes down to five steps that anyone can do. And, once you’ve done them, you can make that sell to get some cash in hand to find your next RV. (And that’s the exciting part.)

     

    Step 1. Start with a Smart, Simple Tool

    Whether you’re a dealership or an individual, RV Trader is a benchmark place to find or list used RVs. Quite literally millions of searches happen here for people looking to buy and sell RVs. And there are THOUSANDS of RV listings at any given time. (As of this article’s publication, there are 190,225, which is an OCEAN of RV listings.)

    With that much information, we have the RV Trader valuation tool based on all those listings. This gives you a good starting place if you’re planning to sell your RV. (Or if you’re looking to get that perfect RV that’ll be your platform for adventure.) This tool also takes into account values from JD Power, which is one of the tools used by RV dealers to determine the value of RVs. 

     

    Step 2. Follow up with JD Power NADA Guide 

    How the Guide Works

    Formerly known as the NADA guide (National Automotive Dealers Association), this is another source to figure out the value of  your RV. The company basically takes the sale prices of RVs all over the country and puts them into a resource that calculates these values. You input the year, make and model of RV and the system will return a value.

    Still, you should know: In using this guide, there are plenty of ways to affect the number it gives you. Options can affect the value of your RV, of course, and some of those options can make a big change in price. For example, a robust solar package, second air conditioner, generator or any number of big-ticket items can change what the RV is worth. 

    But these systems also give you a listing for options like an air conditioner, microwave oven, and even down to things like scissor jacks. Know that, if these were standard equipment on your RV that all RVs of your type came from the factory with, these weren’t options that affect the value. Unfortunately, as good as the information on this site is, it can be a bit confusing with respect to options. (Plus, lots of ads are there that seem like they’re actually part of the site but drag you somewhere else.)

     

    Understanding the Different Values

    Ultimately, the site will also give you three values: suggested list price, low retail, and average retail. If you’re shopping for a used RV or looking to value your own RV, suggested list price is irrelevant. Low retail would be probably about what a dealer would pay you in trade or if you just sold it there. Average retail would be closer to what you’d see that RV listed on a dealer’s lot for. 

    What all this does is give you a relative baseline. If you’re selling, I would start close to the average retail when listing the price of your RV, depending on the condition of your RV.

     

    Step 3. Understand Condition Makes the Difference

    How Condition Affects the Value of Your RV

    One of the things that absolutely will affect the value of an RV is the condition. Even the perception of the condition. If there is clear damage to the RV or systems that don’t work, this clearly has an effect on the value of the rig. 

    If you’re a seller, this is true whether you’re listing your RV for sale privately or even taking it to a dealership. As someone who worked at a dealership I can tell you that the RVs that looked like they were truly unloved got a lot less value. Especially when compared to those that could immediately be turned around and put on the lot. 

    Since used RVs generally have more profit than new ones, seeing a well-cared-for used RV come in for trade or sale was exciting. And that’s because we knew our customers would also be excited about it. Bottom line: It would sell quickly. 

    Seeing something come in that looked like it had spent a bad night a the college fraternity was not exciting. Often times, these tired-looking rigs would get less value from us and end-up at the auction. It makes sense, right? We didn’t want an RV like that on our lot. 

     

    What You Can Do to Demonstrate Value

    So,whether you’re selling it privately or taking it to a dealership, a good bath and attention to all the systems in the RV you’re selling can make a substantial difference in what you’ll sell it for. As a buyer, scrolling the listings here online, some of the RVs I see posted for sale look like they were used to go garage sale shopping. Som sellers don’t bother to take the junk out before taking the photos. (They should have used these great tips for taking better photos of your RV

    However, also speaking from the perspective of a buyer, when you do come across that RV that looks good, it’s also a good idea to have that RV inspected. The care an RV gets, particularly with regard to the seals that keep water out, will make a tremendous difference in your experience with that rig. 

    So, with that in mind, a seller who welcomes a professional inspector says a lot about that individual or dealership but the inspection can also money well spent. 

     

    Step 4. Remember Location and Seasons Are Factors

    Regional Preferences to Consider

    Both the RV Trader and JD Power valuation tools take into account where you are. And this is relevant. I recently sold my own RV, and that RV had a very robust lithium and solar system on it. The value to customers of this type of technology can be different depending on where you are. It’s a much more desirable package in the Southwest, where I spend much of my time. However, it would likely have been valued less in the northern part of the country. 

    That’s also true of RVs with multiple air conditioners. While the AC in my own RV didn’t get a lot of use, plenty of RVers in the South want multiple air conditioners in the summer months. So, RVs outfitted thusly might be easier to sell and carry more value. Where there is more of a presence of winter, RVs with good all-weather packages are likely to gain more favor. 

     

    Seasonal Advice for Selling

    Even the time of year can change some of the value of an RV. For example, right now fewer people are thinking of venturing out than, perhaps, in April when the season is starting for more people. (Plus, they may have tax return money they want to spend on buying an RV.) Conversely, as a buyer, the winter months might be a great time to go shopping. If you’re selling, this would be the time to look through RV Trader to see what others are asking. 

     

    Step 5. Get Your Paperwork Squared Away

    Required Documentation to Expedite Your RV Sale

    Once the condition of the RV has been established — and you have a rough idea of the price based on the RV Trader and JD Power values — you’re ready. Now, it’s time for buyer and seller to come together. This is where it can get sticky. Everybody has a number in mind, but the benchmarks you’ve established should help. They create a realistic number that’s fair to both buyer and seller. 

    One aspect that can affect the price and success of the sale is how prepared the seller is. Having all the required documentation — including license, title information, and the status of any loan that may be on the RV — is important. If there is a loan on the RV, can the new buyer take it over? And, if so, what is the payoff amount? Is selling the RV contingent on paying off the loan? If there is a loan, the loan company is the one who is going to have possession of the title. So, know what it would take to get possession of this and how long. 

     

    Dealing with an Outstanding Balance on a Loan

    Unfortunately, the outstanding balance of a loan the seller may have does not affect the value of the RV. Working at a dealership I saw plenty of people who owed far more than what the RV would reasonably sell for. As the seller. this is something to be keenly aware of as you will have to figure out how to overcome the difference in what the RV is worth today and what the balance of the loan is. Know that lending institutions also use the same resources to determine the value of a used RV. And they typically base the maximum they’ll lend for a unit on these numbers. So, if you’re way upside down, or owe much more than the RV is worth, you likely won’t be able to get back everything you owe on it. 

    If you’re the buyer, learn about any loan the seller may have on the RV. Then look at what it would take to pay that off and get title in your name. (Or in the name of your finance company.) On the subject of finance company, have your money situation sorted-out before going to buy the RV. Many local credit unions offer RV loans at relatively favorable rates. They can also assist in obtaining title and other detail aspects of the transaction. 

     

    Once You Know the Value of Your RV …

    They say that whatever you’re buying or selling is only worth what you can get for it. And that’s true. But using the benchmarks from the valuators I mentioned and perusing listings here to see what others are asking can go a long way toward figuring out a fair price for that RV you’re selling or buying.  And once you know that … well, that’s when the real fun begins.

    Everyone RVs a little different. Some of us full-time. Some of us are seasonal travelers. And others are weekend warriors. (Poor aliens. They must be so confused.)

    Point is, there is some metabolic urge that drives us back towards nature and isolation, toward minimalism and vulnerability.  This exact urge is the advantage that your RV has over a hotel room that probably smells like cigarettes and old Chinese food. If you work it right, you can offer people so much more than a place to stay. You can offer them an experience. And you can make them feel at home as a human being.

    Once, I stayed in an Airbnb that was anchored out in the middle of the water on a rickety old sailboat that ran aground every day at low tide. There was no water, barely a bathroom, and barely a bed. But it was the most memorable Airbnb I ever stayed in. The scenery was wild and vibrant. It had a 360-degree postcard view. For that Airbnb host, I was the guest they had in mind. Meanwhile, on the other side of the harbor, I saw an Airbnb couple pull up to another rickety old boat. Their water taxi loaded down with suitcases straight from the airport. After they were dropped off on the deck of their new hotel on the water, I watched the lady sit down on her luggage (there were no chairs) and cry. Clearly, she was not the right client for that experience. 

    When setting up your RV on Airbnb for short-term rental (yes, you can list it as a home), you have to know who your audience is. If you market your RVBNB as something other than what it is, you will undoubtedly get unhappy clients and bad reviews. But you don’t have to appeal to everyone. There is a market for what you are offering. You just have to ask yourself what you love about it, and work that angle. Don’t try to make your listing look like something it’s not. Not everyone wants to have the experience you are offering. But those that do, will pay. 

     

    Marketing an Experience: Small Can Be Big  

    Tiny houses, RVs, and other non-traditional structures have a huge place in the short-term rental market. You have to remember, short-term rentals are popular because they are offering something that hotels can’t. A hotel is like a dinner at a corporate restaurant. You know exactly what you are going to get. The food is cooked the same every time, and the menu never changes.

    But there is a market out there for something different, unique, and even a little risky. Some people crave reliability, dependability and security. But there are also people out there that want something different when they travel, they want a unique experience with a singular view. An RV offers uniqueness in a big way. Size doesn’t matter. In fact, some of the tiniest structures get the biggest hits on Airbnb. It’s all about how you market it. We asked people who have recently bought an RV, and we came up with a list of five things that will definitely spook a buyer — just in time for Halloween. Avoiding these common pitfalls when selling your RV online will help you get the ultimate treat: an authentic, enthusiastic buyer.

     

    Don’t Want Scare an RV Buyer? Avoid These Mistakes

    1. Crime Scene Photography

    Besides the price tag, one of the first things that buyers look at are your photos. Good photos are likely your best asset when selling your RV online, but they can also be the biggest challenge.

    Modern smartphones have incredible cameras but they can’t solve all the problems in front of the lens. When I was working at a dealership I learned a lot about taking RV photos. Here’s how to make your RV look its best, and not like something out of CSI.

    First, clear off surfaces and spaces so that the bones – the countertop material, the cupboard interiors, the flooring – can be seen. I have bought and sold a number of vintage RVs and the biggest turn-off, to me, is when there is a ton of clutter in the RV. I’ve seen some photos of RV bathrooms piled high with what can best be described as junk. It’s worth the effort to remove all those items – if only temporarily – so that buyers can see the RV underneath. A polished gem will fetch a lot more than a diamond in the rough.

    Second, remove anything that’s not included in the RV. If your special towels, appliances, or anything else are in the photos, they’re assumed to be included in what you’re selling. As with real estate photography, you want to present a blank canvas that a potential buyer can picture themselves in.

    Third, get the lighting right. For exteriors, cloudy days will give you even lighting without harsh glare or shadows. When taking interior pictures, close the blinds and turn on the interior lights if at all possible.

    Finally, be thorough: Include all the spaces in the RV such as the kitchen, bathroom, living space, and cockpit on drivable rigs. Show the interior of cabinets and appliances where you can – the more photos the better. Photos of the tires and underside – and on drivable rigs, the engine too – will help a prospect gain an idea of the condition the RV is in.

     

    2. An Unreliable Narrator

    A frequent frustration for buyers is a lack of details in a listing. For example, how many people can sleep in the RV? What are some of the highlights of the rig? Are there flexible features, such as bunks that could be used as an office or a dining table that can also be converted to a bed for adults?

    These details are all really easy to obtain, and you can usually find a list of specs and standard equipment by looking up the RV’s model number. Also, every RV has some unique selling point and oftentimes you’ll find that in the RV manufacturer’s own website.

    For the customizations, you may need to consult the original paperwork. If you’re selling the RV on behalf of a relative, perhaps sit with them and make a list of everything they can tell you about the RV. If you have unanswered questions, perhaps find a group that knows the rig and they could help you compile details about the RV.

    Putting all this data together – and having it handy when you take calls – will let you answer your buyers’ questions with confidence. With so many scams happening lately, being sketchy or unsure of details might tell a prospective buyer that this is not a legitimate sale, even when it is. The more information you have and the better informed you are, the more confident a prospective buyer can be.

     

    3. A Life Shrouded in Mystery

    A description of your RV is incomplete without details of its history. Give buyers a complete picture of the RV they’re considering: Do all the appliances work? How old are the tires and brakes? Has there been a recent inspection or any recent service to demonstrate how well you’ve taken care of the RV?

    This one’s for drivable rigs: Do you have all the service records on hand? A documented, consistent service history shows potential buyers that you’ve been diligent about maintenance – and buyers are willing to pay more for that peace of mind.

    Speaking of money, you should be ready to answer questions about the financial aspects of the RV; for example, if you have to pay off a loan to complete the transaction. It’s also good to have on hand all your documentation, including relevant ownership information – if there is someone willing to buy your RV, you don’t want to delay the sale while you hunt down paperwork.

     

    4. Ghosting the Answering Machine

    Once you’ve found someone who’s interested in the RV you’re selling, be responsive. Sometimes when I try to buy an RV, I’ll contact the buyer several times but never hear back. Or, when they eventually called back, it was too late – I had moved on.

    Engaging with buyers tells them that you’re motivated to find a new home for your home on wheels and that can help when selling your RV online. You can, in turn, gauge their interest by the questions they ask. But being evasive or difficult to reach – well, that’ll send them to the next listing that catches their eye.

     

    5. The Devil in the Details

    Closing the deal involves paperwork, and if it drags on for too long, that can give buyers cold feet. At the same time, with a transaction this large, you want to make sure you’ve covered all your bases.

    Start by gathering all the appropriate paperwork on your end. Next, it’s reasonable to inquire about the abilities of the buyer to complete the transaction. Ask for a copy of their proof before letting them do a test drive on a motorized RV.

    Are you financing your RV at the moment, and would they also need to do the same? It’s worth checking in with the financial institution that you’re using to finance the RV to see if your potential buyers will qualify for a similar loan and if so, the loan officer can help complete the process.

    It’s no secret that the current economic landscape has left consumers with a level of uncertainty, but a recent consumer sentiment survey from RV Trader unveils a surprising resilience among respondents. In this survey, 60% of respondents expressed a belief that the economic environment will either improve or remain stable. 

    In contrast, 40% of respondents from the same survey anticipate a worsening economic environment. However, interestingly, this pessimism doesn’t seem to hold significant influence over their purchasing decisions. Despite acknowledging a less optimistic outlook, this segment of consumers exhibits a surprising determination where the economic landscape isn’t contributing to hesitancy or restraint when it comes to making significant purchases. 

    Of the respondents as a whole, only 15% decided not to purchase at all, mostly due to a lack of finances to support a large purchase. However, in the broader context of consumer sentiment, a prevailing attitude emerges— “We are proceeding with our purchases regardless,” prompting closer evaluation of how these contrasting outlooks are affecting purchase decisions. 

    On the Up and Up

    Among those adopting an optimistic stance, 61% assert that the economic climate exerts no influence on their purchase decisions, while an additional 39% contemplate broadening their purchase beyond their initial vision. 

    Cautiously Optimistic

    For those with a more pessimistic view, they won’t let that stop them from making their purchase but are airing on the side of caution. While 32% assert that economic conditions won’t sway their buying decisions, a portion of this group is recalibrating their search strategy. Notably, 25% are actively exploring more budget-friendly options, 24% are trimming down their overall purchase budget, and 23% are contemplating the prospect of purchasing a used unit. Interestingly, only 22% are contemplating a delay in their intended purchase until they feel the economic condition has improved.

    Purchase Timeline

    Among this group of active in-market shoppers, a significant majority—over 50%—anticipate being behind the wheel of their new RVs by summer, marking a timeframe of six months or less. Additionally, nearly 60% of respondents expressing intent to purchase their next RV are confident that the entire process, from consideration to final acquisition, will conclude in less than three months.

    A notable 74% of respondents indicated external factors such as a reduction in interest rates (27%) or a decrease in vehicle prices (47%) would incentivize them to contemplate an earlier purchase. Likewise, 32% factor in more personal considerations, such as changes in their individual economic circumstances, when considering the timing of their purchase.

    When contemplating the possibility of delaying a purchase, a substantial portion, accounting for 52%, cite internal factors such as their personal situation as a significant influence. Financial considerations emerging close behind as pivotal elements in this decision-making process, with interest rates (31%) and rising vehicle prices (36%) identified as the two top proceeding key factors.

    The How, What and Why of Their Purchase

    Respondents are almost evenly divided when it comes to their preferred payment method, with 47% opting for financing and 53% intending to pay in cash.

    Of the respondents, 61% expressed their inclination toward purchasing a used vehicle. However, what stands out even more prominently is the fact that 30% remain undecided about their choice.

    Around 52% of respondents are motivated either by a desire to upgrade their existing RV (25.7%) or have recently developed a new hobby, propelling them into the market (26.3%).

    In exploring the multifaceted realm of consumer sentiment in the RV market, these insights shed light on the delicate balance between economic perceptions and individual aspirations.
