  • Meet Peeps! A Podcast Novel with a Girl-Camper Twist

Meet Peeps! A Podcast Novel with a Girl-Camper Twist

We learn very early on that the world is made up of people, places, and things. Then, as we get older, we sort their importance. As a rule, RVers tend to be more concerned with places than things. (We only have so much space, after all.) But people are the true constant for every journey. And Erin Gordon’s fourth novel, Peeps, takes readers on a cross-country RV journey that is all about people and the questions that cut through the fiber of us all.

In this RV-driven tale, Meg, Gordon’s central character, hosts a podcast of the same name. But following her mother’s death, Meg makes a radical decision to embark on a journey across the country — as an RV newbie. In search of stories for her podcast and the missing pieces of her own story, Meg’s travels are at times inspiring and often hilarious, making Peeps a funny, charming, and relatable coming-of-age novel that proves you’re never too old for a grand adventure.

A Coming of Middle-Age Story for the Road

In the opening pages, Meg gets hit on all sides with a midlife crisis. At 51, she is orphaned, divorced, and empty-nesting. She gets closer to a breaking point with each passing day, and finds it in an unexpected place — the allure of a glamorous woman’s purse. Meg thinks that someone who needs a big purse must lead a Big Life. Which starts a train of thought on what the Big Life actually looks like. She’s never thought of herself as the kind of woman who could have a Big Life, but there’s a first time for everything.

So, Meg makes a big decision. She picks up her Small Life and shoves it into an RV. (Whom she affectionately names “Irv.”) In search of answers about her mother, she sets off cross-country to find her uncle. Along the way, she conducts interviews for her podcast. In each interview, she asks the same seven questions — with each chapter concluding with a transcription of her most recent episode. These interviews allow the reader to really connect with Meg and the people she sits across from — as they can see Meg herself wrestle with her complicated grief, feelings about her divorce, and her only son moving away to college.

    Girl Camping, Interviews, and Introspection

Peeps is a novel for any adult, though its content — a first-time girl camper on the road — is clearly meant to appeal to women. It has cute moments and also shares personal insights that travelers commonly pick up along the way. Erin Gordon is a journalist herself, and it shows in Meg’s passion for the audio interview. Personally, Gordon’s writing style reminds me of an elevated John Green, with her habit of portraying action or inside jokes first with explanation second.

Gordon and Green also have a similar focus on the small pieces of a character: their habits, mannerisms, and quirks. Unlike Green, Gordon writes for an adult audience, and her characters experience adult lives and adult problems. As the premise teases, readers can expect to really enjoy the interviews in the book — even as it makes them consider their own answers to seven questions. These podcast transcriptions are also a clever device to break up the monotony of protagonists voice and allowed you to fall in love with the mundane — just as she does.

Getting Your Own Copy of Peeps

Peeps is available as both a physical book and ebook. The writing was simple and pointed without being boring. (However, I wasn’t able to find an audio book.) Readers should beware that the book deals with death, death of a parent, grief, divorce, and parental neglect, among other potentially difficult and adult topics.

Peeps was a great read that I’ve already passed along to my bookish friends. Gordon’s love of the ordinary shines through the pages to light up the simplicity in your days. It’s absolutely worth taking a chance on, and so rewarding when you do.

  • Sandusky Reckoning: An RV Book Review

Sandusky Reckoning: An RV Book Review

Spoiler warning: Because the Sandusky Darkness series takes place with no time skip between books, there is simply no way to talk about Sandusky Reckoning without spoiling the end of the first novel, Sandusky Burning. This review is written with the assumption that the reader has already read Sandusky Burning. (So, if you fear a spoiler, don’t say we didn’t warn you.)

A Thrilling Sequel to Sandusky Burning

Veteran Brady Sullivan’s bad week gets even worse in the sequel novel Sandusky Reckoning. In the first novel, what had appeared to be an everyday campground was a front for something else entirely — a criminal cabal hiding in plain sight. But if Brady thought that taking down Randy and his wannabe gang would put an end to his problems, he had no idea what was coming. Instead, he stepped on the Romanian hornet’s nest hidden just under Sandusky Shores.

Readers who enjoyed Bryan W. Conway’s action-packed first novel will love the sequel. Conway delivers another gritty, suspenseful, action-packed “NoirV” novel that pulls no punches. Sandusky Reckoning continues with the first novel’s penchant for split perspectives and dramatic irony. It also introduces an entirely unique storyline.

It would have been easy for Conway to end the story after Brady and Mike’s crazy stunt at the end of the first book, leaving readers to speculate at their miraculous escape from consequences and eventual happy ending. But Conway isn’t interested in telling easy stories. Brady has new enemies now — including Randy’s self-appointed successor, Daniella, and her thirst for revenge; the crooked Sheriff Minelli’s with a thirst for justice; and Chris’s girlfriend Candy’s with thirst for vodka cranberries. In the previous novel, Brady and his vet buddy Mike pulled off a hasty, sloppy, messy, passionate retaliation against Randy’s crew. But in this second novel, there is a reckoning. And we get to see the fallout in Technicolor detail. It’s a refreshing take on the typical action story formula that’s more than welcome.

A Literary Reckoning: Highs and Lows

Between his first and second book, Conway has put considerable effort into improving his craft. His writing style is more confident, impactful, and intentional. His characters get their depth from distinct, justified motivations instead of from how many drinks they have before noon. Conway uses the large cast to build mystery around storylines, characters, and events we thought we understood well. These are characters that we can root for, with a conflict that is anything but straightforward. I can also say that Chris’s suicide on the railway at the end of Sandusky Burning is important and felt by the characters in the sequel, rather than only providing the conclusion with unnecessary shock value.

While Conway greatly improved on his writing, there is room for improvement in his story editing. The timeline is admittedly unclear and hard to follow. His entries from the Sandusky Register aren’t quite believable as journalism and detract from the reader’s ability to totally immerse in the narrative. His second Black character also seem to be more of a stereotype than his first, Mike. And his bilingual Romanians fail to convince me that they are bilingual — or Romanian, for that matter. That said, these are just a few literary pests — small, persistent annoyances that can’t be ignored but certainly don’t ruin the reading experience.

Getting Your Hands on a Copy

As a self-published novel, this book is not one that you will likely find in a physical store — like a Books-A-Million or Barnes & Noble. (And none of my electronic purchases went through except on Amazon.) So, Amazon is your best bet to get a physical copy of Sandusky Reckoning. It also may be the only copy available. Those that prefer an audiobook — like me — will be disappointed to find that the Sandusky Reckoning audiobook on Spotify is just the Sandusky Burning recording re-uploaded. I’m excited to see what Conway puts out next, and to see whether his potential as a novelist blossoms into mastery.

  • How to Rock a Senior Prom for Snowbirds

How to Rock a Senior Prom for Snowbirds

The RV life has some surprises that can only make you smile. And the unique charm of one snowbird tradition is just irresistible. That is, if you’re old enough. We’re talking about a senior prom for snowbirds. For retirees who migrate south to escape the winter chill, a senior prom isn’t just a dance. It’s a chance to relive old memories. To make new ones. And to just let loose, connect, and revel in the golden glow of a second youth — and a southern sun.

What makes these events so special is their ability to bring out the best in everyone. From beautifully decorated venues to the infectious energy of live music, a senior prom for snowbirds is about breaking away from everyday routines and stepping into a night of pure enjoyment.

This guide to snowbird proms will cover everything you need to know to attend, participate, and savor every moment.

    Behind the Senior Prom Tradition

As mentioned, a senior prom for snowbirds is more than a dance. It’s a event. And these events typically occur during peak winter months, allowing snowbirds to gather, socialize, and showcase their shared sense of community. From live music to themed décor, every detail is thoughtfully curated to create a festive atmosphere.

The tradition isn’t just about reliving the past and embracing the present. Many attendees view the event as an opportunity to celebrate their active lifestyles and create joyful new memories. It’s also a chance to honor the friendships and connections made within snowbird communities, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness that makes this lifestyle so appealing.

For many, these events become a highlight of their snowbird calendar. Beyond dancing and socializing, the proms often feature additional activities like raffles, costume contests, or even fundraisers for local charities. This fun and community support combination ensures these gatherings leave a lasting impact beyond the dance floor.

Growing Popularity of Senior Proms for Snowbirds

The tradition of senior proms for snowbirds began decades ago, inspired by the nostalgia of high school dances and the camaraderie of seasonal living. As these events grew in popularity, they became highlights of the snowbird calendar, offering a lighthearted way to connect and celebrate life. Today, they’re staples in communities from Florida to Arizona, drawing retirees nationwide.

Originally informal gatherings, these proms have since evolved into carefully organized events that reflect the unique personalities of their host communities. Early versions might have featured potluck dinners and homemade decorations, while today’s proms often include professional catering, themed décor, and live entertainment. This evolution mirrors the growing sophistication of the snowbird lifestyle.

As the events grew, so did their reputations. Many attendees now plan their annual travels around these proms, ensuring they don’t miss the opportunity to participate. Whether it’s the chance to relive the magic of their youth or enjoy a night of good company and great music, these proms continue to thrive as cherished milestones in the snowbird experience.

Planning to Attend a Snowbird Prom

Finding the perfect senior prom starts with tapping into the right resources. Check local community centers, RV park bulletin boards, or online snowbird forums for event details. Many snowbird destinations have dedicated social calendars with activities like dances, golf tournaments, and appreciation events.

It’s worth exploring word-of-mouth recommendations from fellow snowbirds as well. Communities often have insiders who can point you toward the best events or even offer tips for snagging coveted tickets. Attending smaller local meetups can also help you connect with others who are in the know about upcoming proms.

Don’t overlook social media as a resource. Facebook groups dedicated to snowbird communities often share event details and insider tips. Event websites like Eventbrite or Meetup can also help you discover proms and similar activities. Bookmark your favorites and set reminders so you don’t miss out on registration deadlines.

    Ticketing and Reservations

Senior proms for snowbirds are often in high demand. Secure your tickets early to avoid missing out on the fun. Many events also offer discounted early-bird pricing or group rates, so coordinating with friends can save you a spot and a few dollars.

Be sure to inquire about ticket inclusions. Some proms offer package deals, including dinner, drinks, or extra perks like raffle tickets. Knowing what’s included helps you plan your evening and ensures no surprises on the night of the event.

Consider joining event committees or volunteering as an alternative to purchasing tickets. Many organizers reward volunteers with free entry, and it’s a great way to get involved in the community while meeting new people. This approach saves money and deepens your connection to the event and its attendees.

Dressing the Part for Your Snowbird Prom

Dressing for a senior prom in a snowbird destination means combining elegance with comfort. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics suited to warm climates. Ladies can explore flowy dresses or chic pant sets, while men can consider dress shirts paired with slacks or khakis.

If you’re unsure about what to wear, don’t hesitate to ask around. Other attendees or event organizers can provide helpful insights into the dress code. The goal is to feel confident and comfortable. So, choose attire that allows you to enjoy the evening without any restrictions.

Many attendees also enjoy embracing a touch of sparkle or flair. Think sequins, bold accessories, or costume elements that tie into the event’s theme. The prom is an opportunity to express yourself, so don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with your look.

Accessorizing Can Make It Even More Fun

Accessories elevate your outfit while offering practical solutions. Choose comfortable shoes for dancing and consider adding a wide-brimmed hat or stylish sunglasses for daytime events. A small clutch or crossbody bag keeps essentials like your phone and tickets handy without compromising your style.

When accessorizing, think about the climate. Lightweight scarves, statement jewelry, or a decorative fan can add personality to your outfit while keeping you cool. Pocket squares or themed ties can provide a playful touch without going overboard for men.

For couples, coordinating accessories can be a fun way to stand out. Matching colors or complementary patterns can make your outfits pop while reinforcing the spirit of togetherness that these events celebrate. It’s a small detail that can make a big impression.

Making the Most of Snowbird Prom

Snowbird senior proms are about connecting with others. Don’t hesitate to talk with fellow attendees. Everyone’s there to have a good time! Introduce yourself to tablemates, join group activities, and hit the dance floor to mingle.

For those attending solo, consider arriving early to get acquainted with the layout and other attendees. Starting conversations during the quieter moments of the evening can make connecting easier. Compliments are always a great conversation starter — commenting on someone’s outfit or dance moves can break the ice effortlessly.

If you’re shy, look for opportunities to join group activities or games, which naturally facilitate interaction. Many senior proms include trivia, raffles, or group dances that encourage participation. These moments are perfect for bonding with others and making the event even more memorable.

    Capturing Memories

Many senior proms feature photo booths or professional photographers to help you commemorate the night. Bring a camera or smartphone to snap candid shots with friends or use themed backdrops. These moments make for great keepsakes or social media posts to share with family back home.

Consider creating a scrapbook or digital photo album to document the event and share the experience with others. Collect mementos like event programs, tickets, or table decorations to add a personal touch to your collection of memories.

If photography isn’t your strong suit, don’t hesitate to ask someone to take a picture. Most attendees are happy to help, and it’s a great way to initiate a conversation. You might even make a new friend while capturing the perfect shot.

    Health and Safety Considerations

Ensure the venue is ADA-compliant, with features like ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms. If you have specific needs, contact organizers ahead of time to confirm accommodations.

Don’t forget to factor in your comfort. If standing for long periods is a concern, inquire whether seating is available near the dance floor or in quieter areas. Bringing your own lightweight, foldable chair can also be a great solution for outdoor events.

Accessibility isn’t just about physical spaces. It’s also about inclusivity. If you or a loved one have dietary restrictions or specific health considerations, communicate these to the event organizers in advance. Many senior proms for snowbirds are happy accommodating special requests to ensure every guest has a positive experience.

    Transportation Arrangements

Coordinate transportation to and from the venue. Many communities offer shuttle services for senior events, or you could organize a carpool with friends to make the evening more enjoyable and convenient.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, consider using GPS apps or consulting local maps beforehand. This ensures you know the best routes and available parking options. Some proms even partner with transportation companies to offer discounts for attendees — be sure to ask!

For those traveling in larger groups, renting a van or minibus can make the journey part of the fun. Sharing the ride not only reduces stress but also adds to the camaraderie. You won’t have to worry about finding multiple parking spots at a busy venue.

    Celebrate on the Dance Floor!

A senior prom for snowbirds may be much more than just a dance, it is still a dance! So have fun and cut a rug — whether that’s with your partner of 50 years or a stunning new acquaintance.

Senior prom is a vibrant but safe celebration of friendship, cherished memories, and the simple joy of coming together as a community. With the right preparation and a sprinkle of enthusiasm, you can ensure this special evening becomes a highlight of your snowbird season. From choosing the perfect outfit to swaying to the final song, every moment is an opportunity to embrace the magic of the night.

Whether it’s your first snowbird prom or you’re a seasoned attendee, these events have something for everyone. They’re the perfect chance to reminisce, connect with fellow RVers, and create memories that will make you smile long after you’re back on the road. So, shine those dancing shoes, grab your ticket, and get ready for an unforgettable evening filled with laughter, music, and lasting friendships.

  • The Unwritten Rules of Snowbirding

    The Unwritten Rules of Snowbirding

Ah, that seasonal migration that sees thousands, maybe even millions, of birds heading south for the winter. What a sight to behold — on the highways. And see it you will if you join flocks of RVs in adjusting their latitude for a friendlier clime. In the RV world, we call this snowbirding. In the winter, many RVers seek a warmer, cozier nest to park at during the cold months. But if you’d like to do the same, you might have a few questions as a first timer. How can you make your seasonal RV migration the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and exploration?

Well, as with any lifestyle, there are unwritten rules to help snowbirds maintain harmony with others and ensure a smooth journey. While some may ascribe these rules to instinct, we’ll take a moment to write down the unwritten for the uninitiated. So, whether you’re headed for the sunny beaches of Florida, the deserts of Arizona, or exploring unique stops along the way, following these guidelines can make your experience (and those of your fellow travelers) even better.

    1. Respect Your Neighbors and Their Space

When RV parks and campgrounds are packed with snowbirds, shared respect becomes essential. Keep noise levels low, especially during early mornings and late evenings. This includes ensuring that generators are used responsibly and that loud activities, like music or social gatherings, don’t disturb others.

Tip: Always park your RV and set up equipment — such as awnings, tables, and chairs — within your designated space. Try not to walk through anyone else’s site either. Encroaching on neighboring spots or common areas can lead to tension. And since you may be neighbors for a season, tension is best avoided from the get go. A little spatial awareness goes a long way!

    2. Book Early and Stay Flexible

Popular snowbird destinations like Florida, Texas, and Arizona fill up quickly, especially during peak season from November to March. Reserving sites in advance ensures you won’t be left scrambling for a place to stay. However, flexibility is equally important — whether it’s adjusting your route due to weather or switching campgrounds for better amenities.

Tip: Keep your itinerary fluid and have a backup plan. Sometimes, the unexpected turns out to be the most memorable part of the journey. I can’t tell you how many times we have had more fun with the unexpected than the planned.

    3. Keep Your Site Clean and Tidy

One of the simplest ways to be a good snowbird neighbor is to keep your space neat and follow campground guidelines for trash disposal and recycling. This not only creates a welcoming environment but also shows respect for the park staff and other RVers.

Tip: Implement the Leave No Trace principle by ensuring your site is clean when you leave. Keeping outdoor areas tidy also helps prevent wildlife from scavenging near campsites.

    4. Introduce Yourself and Share Resources

While snowbirding offers plenty of quiet moments, it also provides great opportunities to meet new people. A simple introduction to your neighbors can lead to new friendships or valuable tips about the area. Additionally, sharing tools or resources — like a ladder, grill, or even extra supplies — encourages a sense of community.

Tip: Participate in campground activities, such as potlucks, bingo nights, or local outings. These events foster camaraderie and help create lasting memories on the road.

    5. Stay Connected and Prepared for Emergencies

Staying in touch with family and monitoring weather or road conditions are essential parts of snowbirding. Equip your RV with mobile hotspots, Starlink, or some personal Wi-Fi. Try to keep campground Wi-Fi as a final option to stay connected, because more often than not, campground Wi-Fi can be slow or spotty. Preparation for emergencies — such as carrying a first aid kit, spare parts, and essential tools — ensures you’ll be ready for the unexpected.

Tip: Use navigation apps like Google Maps or RV-specific tools to plan routes and avoid low-clearance bridges or challenging roads. Regular maintenance checks on your RV help prevent breakdowns on the journey.

    6. Respect Local Wildlife and Nature

Snowbirding often takes you through nature-rich areas. While encounters with wildlife can be exciting, it’s essential to keep a respectful distance. Feeding animals or leaving food scraps out can create dangerous situations for both you and the animals, and you should never do that without the supervision and encouragement of local rangers or professionals that deal with animals.

Tip: Follow local guidelines about wildlife safety and be mindful when hiking or exploring. Always store food securely to avoid attracting unwanted critters.

    7. Embrace a Minimalist Approach to Packing

When RV living becomes your seasonal lifestyle, packing smart is key. Focus on multiuse items, such as convertible furniture or seasonal clothing that can be layered. The more organized you are, the less clutter you’ll need to manage. Remember that it is usually easier to stop and buy something as needed than to overpack and be forced to get rid of something if space becomes an issue.

Tip: Invest in storage solutions like bins, organizers, or vacuum-sealed bags to make the most of your space. Having a “one-in, one-out” rule for new items helps prevent overcrowding.

    8. Adapt to the Campground Culture

Each RV park or campground has its unique vibe. Some might bustle with activities, while others might cater to those seeking peace and solitude. Take the time to observe and adapt to the culture of each location.

Tip: If a campground promotes quiet time, embrace it. If it encourages social events, join in! Understanding the rhythm of your environment ensures an enjoyable experience for everyone. If you prefer a specific type of activity or culture, do some research well in advance to find a couple of campground options that meet your criteria.

    9. Know and Follow the Rules

Every campground or RV park has specific rules — covering everything from quiet hours and pet policies to check-in/check-out procedures. Following these guidelines ensures smooth operations for the park and keeps you in good standing with management. If you are in one campground for a long time, it is always good to be in good standing with the staff, as they can make or break your stay.

Tip: If traveling with pets, familiarize yourself with pet-friendly parks and follow leash laws. Bring waste bags and be diligent about cleaning up after your furry companions — this always gives bonus points with staff and fellow RVers alike.

    10. Enjoy the Journey

Snowbirding is more than just escaping the cold — it’s about embracing a lifestyle of exploration and having fun. Take time to savor the small moments, whether it’s enjoying a sunrise at the beach or sharing stories around a campfire.

Tip: Keep a travel journal or start a photo blog to document your adventures. Celebrating each step of the journey helps you stay present and appreciate the unique experiences snowbirding offers.

Bonus Section: Winterizing for the Journey South

Even though snowbirds head for warmer climates, winterizing your RV before departure may still be necessary if you will be traveling through freezing temperatures before arriving to your desired final destination. Freezing temperatures can damage pipes, tanks, and hoses, so preparation is crucial.

    • Winterize Plumbing. Drain your freshwater and wastewater systems if traveling through freezing zones. Use RV antifreeze to protect pipes from damage.
    • Heated Water Hose. Bring a heated water hose if you’ll need water connections during chilly stops.
    • Monitor Temperatures. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, and consider using tank heaters or insulation to prevent freezing.
    • Interior Warmth. A portable heater can help maintain interior comfort during travel through colder regions.

Snowbirding offers the opportunity to escape the winter chill and explore new destinations, all while building a sense of community on the road. By following these unwritten rules — respecting neighbors, planning ahead, staying flexible, and embracing nature — you can make the most of your snowbirding adventure. And who knows, you may just come away with some new lifelong friendships.

So, now that the temps are dropping, prepare your RV, stay connected, and enjoy the journey south, one sunny destination at a time. Safe travels!

  • “What Am I Doing Out Here?” One Man’s Winter in a Tipi

“What Am I Doing Out Here?” One Man’s Winter in a Tipi

Time in nature can take the mind to unexpected places. Even primal places. Years back, as I was working full-time in land survey, I began to wonder: What would it be like to live in a tipi? Not just tent camping or setting out in an RV. I imagined a life that would be more simple — and viscerally natural. Life in a tipi had a romance to it in my mind. I imagined the warmth of the fire, the cozy space, and the relaxation of being one with nature. It was an imagining so compelling that I made a decision to try it.

As you might expect, I discovered that imagination and reality don’t always align. Nature is a stern and effective teacher. But what she teaches, you keep forever.

“I found a clearing in the woods”

For me, there was something about the tipi itself. About that place being my residence. Sure, I could have just rented a room in a house or a small apartment somewhere. But then cooking, bathing, and simple tasks would have been a monotonous bore. I wanted a place that provided shelter as well as adventure. Something just past the fringe of civilization. And living in a tipi in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina suited that purpose. It was my ideal option — not to mention the cheapest.

Letting my sense of adventure prevail, I ordered an $1,100 handmade canvas tipi from Oregon. The tipi came with a small canvas door, an inside liner for insulation, and some rope to tie the poles together at the top. But in order to properly set up a 16-foot tipi, you need fairly long tipi poles — 22 feet in my case. And those did not come with the tipi. Rather, the best option was to make them out of young poplar trees and a few pines. Tulip poplar is a sun loving hardwood tree that grows fast and requires a lot of sunlight. As a result, it grows tall and straight in order to quickly dominate a young forest canopy. The forest had these in abundance.

I found a clearing in the woods inside a local national forest that was growing 5- to 7-year old poplars. From these, I was able to secure about 20 straight poles. Then I spent the next two weeks working. I shaved the bark off of the poles to keep them dry and prevent rot. I shaved each individual knot off to keep the rain water running smoothly down the pole. Ultimately, I dedicated my free time after work to the preparation and completion of the poles. Some nights, I’d stay overnight camping to complete the work. Other nights, I’d head back to my regular residence at dark.

One night though, I remember working out there. It was getting dark, and then I heard this person coming the brush and I kinda freaked out. I jerked around, and there was a big bear coming down the mountain — just to check me out. Frozen, I stared at the bear trampling through the oncoming dark, looking back at me, and moving on. I remember thinking in that moment, “What am I doing out here?”

    “Then the magic began”

After the first week, I was finally ready to raise the tipi. I laid three poles down and secured them together near the top. The structure went up, balanced like a tripod. Rather meditatively, I laid all the other poles in place, working my way around the circle until the framework created a circular shape. Then the magic began. From this point on, I was mesmerized. The skeleton of my home was complete, and I was ready to move in.

Following native tradition, I danced three rotations around the framework, pulling the cordage snugly as it tightened the poles together near the top. I felt like I traveled back in time, to a forgotten era. My life and my age melted away, and my earthly experiences waned. The ritual began to color my portfolio with life’s richest moments to date. Describing it with too many words would probably diminish my actual experience. And it would likely be different for someone else. But I lived a certain freedom. I experienced my own masculinity. In that time, I saw creation and death all at once. Really, I felt like I had completed something true for the first time. The physical world had a greater weight here.

Using the strongest pole, I raised 60 pounds of canvas and secured it to the top and bottom of my tipi. I carefully unfolded the material onto the surrounding poles until the entire structure was covered. I spent the next few hours pulling, stretching, and tightening the canvas around and down toward the ground. The goal was to get a tight, skin-like texture on the dwelling. The work became effortless in time as this ancient structure took shape. In no time, it decorated the landscape as if it always belonged.

“Not an hour goes by unnoticed”

Now fast forward about four months. The fall is dying into winter. And the cold rain is turning into snow. At night the temperatures dropped into the mid-20s. After experimenting with different heating mechanisms — from a wood stove, to a big fire pit, to a small fire pit — I eventually found that the best option was, ironically, a small, smokeless fire set deep into a pit surrounded by flat reflective rocks. (Super dry, healthy wood burns a clean, bright, and smokeless fire.) This flame-rich fire created a mysterious and hypnotic mood that warmed my soul. In turn, it also helped with my internal blood flow to the extremities.

The more time I stayed out there, I began to notice something. Feeling became a daily activity. It became an hourly activity, almost minute to minute in some cases. Making dinner, using the bathroom, washing my hands, all required constant focus and commitment. These things are lost in a comfortable life. In a life of luxury and comfort, days are lost to weeks, and weeks can be lost to years. But here, outside, looking up at the crowded collection of poles tied together, surrounded by cream canvas, and the pervasive wood-smoke aroma, I could hear the sounds of the night. Wind. Raindrops. Spider cricket hopping beside me. And even black bear rummaging around in their heavy, speechless visitations.

Out there, with only canvass between you and the physical world, not a day is lost. Not an hour goes by unnoticed.

    “The challenge of existing”

Looking back, it’s hard to define what happened to me out there in those woods. Why I went. Whether I found what I was looking for or not. But what it is clear is that the tipi lost the romance of its appeal in the winter. Because the challenge of existing outside in a primitive fashion is truly one’s own. If it’s not giving back to you, then it’s not sustainable. If it is giving back, then you are beginning to experience the natural phenomenon of equilibrium.

As the winter wore on, I realized that the tipi didn’t actually keep me warm at night. The fire only warmed my heart and my perspective. So too, the thin canvas walls became something distinguishable — a symbol of togetherness that houses my life. In that time, it gave me purpose, but even that  had to be left behind for the most primal of reasons: It no longer provided any calorie-saving protection. I started to appreciate shelter in a new way, what houses and RVs provide.

Even so, from that winter, I think my skin actually thickened from the elements. Maybe something under the skin too. With nature, I was ready for my winter to end. And when the spring finally returned, it was undoubtedly most beautiful thing.

  • Why Cousin Eddie Makes “Christmas Vacation”

Why Cousin Eddie Makes “Christmas Vacation”

When it comes to Christmas movies, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” hits a sweet spot in pop culture. It’s a zany, more-than-slightly unhinged holiday spectacle with no Santa or snowstorms to bring the laughs. It’s not the lights, the tree, or even Chevy Chase’s manic performance as Clark Griswold that elevates this film to cult-classic status. No, the true MVP is Cousin Eddie Johnson, one of the greatest characters in comedic history — a force of chaos played by Randy Quaid.

Cousin Eddie doesn’t just steal scenes. He burgles them with guns blazing. And in doing so, he transforms “Christmas Vacation” from a solid holiday comedy into a masterpiece of absurdist cinema.

Let’s explore why Cousin Eddie isn’t just the heart of the film — he’s the engine running the whole recreational vehicle.

“That There’s an RV” and the Art of the Absurd

When Cousin Eddie rolls up unannounced in one of Hollywood’s all-time most famous RVs, it’s an inciting event pregnant with unrealized mayhem. In his first frame, Eddie is the perfect foil to Clark Griswold’s yuppie perfectionism. (And that’s clear at our first glance at his wing-tipped hat.) Clark wants a Norman Rockwell holiday. But Eddie lives in a kookie version of “The Twilight Zone.” With his leisure suit, beer-swilling antics, and an unnervingly close relationship with his dog, Snots, Eddie might be a caricature, but a familiar one. The truth is that we recognize him, or parts of him, from our own family gatherings.

Eddie’s comedic genius lies in his total lack of self-awareness. While Clark panics over unblinking lights and combusting turkeys, Eddie is perfectly content in his oblivion. His proud declaration, “That there’s an RV,” provides a juxtaposition of comedy gold. Eddie doesn’t know he’s funny — and that’s precisely what makes him hilarious.

In the history of oddball side characters, Cousin Eddie holds his own against legends like Kramer from “Seinfeld” or Uncle Buck from “Uncle Buck.” What sets Eddie apart is his sheer unpredictability. Kramer might slide into Jerry’s apartment unannounced, but Eddie will dump sewage into his storm drain. “Merry Christmas! Sh***er was full! This isn’t just funny – it also perfectly raises the stakes for the rest of the film. (It politely informs the viewer that this story can — and will — end up in places you can’t imagine.)

Eddie also provides a unique commentary on 1980s pop culture. At a time when yuppie culture and materialism were at their peak, Eddie is its walking antithesis. Clark frets about bonuses and imported Italian twinkle lights, while Eddie offers a simpler, slightly messier view of life. Sure, it’s easy to laugh at his polyester wardrobe and ramshackle RV, but Eddie’s unapologetic authenticity makes him oddly endearing — a comedic reminder that the holiday season isn’t about perfection. It’s about living the life you got, not pining for the one you want.

The Chaotic Energy of the Eddie Factor

No, Eddie didn’t get top billing. But if you need any more convincing that he makes the movie, just imagine “Christmas Vacation” without him. Clark’s meltdowns and the infamous squirrel scene would still elicit laughs, but something would be missing. That something extra. Eddie provides the chaotic energy that keeps the film from becoming a one-note tale of suburban woes. He’s the unpredictable wildcard, ensuring that just when we think we know where the story is going, a dog chases a squirrel through the house.

Cousin Eddie was well written, but Randy Quaid’s pitch-perfect performance sealed the deal. He imbues Eddie with just enough humanity to make him likable, even as his actions nearly ruin Christmas dinner time and time again. From his wide-eyed innocence relating his son’s carnival career to his well-meaning but disastrous kidnapping of Clark’s boss, Eddie is the comedic performance that balances on the knife edge between absurd and absurdly funny.

Why We Need Cousin Eddie in Every Christmas

At its core, “Christmas Vacation” is about family — the good, the bad, and the bizarre. Eddie reminds us that every family has an Eddie — the one who brings the weird casserole, tells inappropriate jokes, or shows up with questionable fashion choices. But those uniquely colorful characters, in life as on the screen, that make life interesting.

In a world obsessed with curated Instagram posts and picture-perfect holiday cards, Cousin Eddie is a refreshing reminder that it’s OK to be unapologetically and unreservedly yourself, just like “Christmas Vacation” itself is a reminder of a time when content was less polished (and called movies). Christmas doesn’t have to be flawless to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s the bathrobe-wearing, sewage-dumping, turkey-obliterating moments that create the best memories.

In that context, Eddie truly becomes the hero of the story, a sage guide for Clark, relentlessly pointing him toward radical self-acceptance, while Clark bumbles his way through an increasingly chaotic and anxiety-filled Christmas.

So, when you gather around the TV this holiday season to watch “Christmas Vacation” for the hundredth time, raise a toast to Cousin Eddie. Because without him, the Griswold family’s Christmas would be a lot less messy — and a lot less fun.

  • Inside the Ultimate Book of LOLZ: Subpar Parks

Inside the Ultimate Book of LOLZ: Subpar Parks

There are some people you just can’t please. No matter how spectacular you are, they’ll never have a kind thing to say. Not once. Now, most people ignore the sour lemons these common malcontents fling. But not Amber Share. Oh, no. She not only loves the lemons; she accepts them as involuntary donations. Then she squeezes them into refreshing lemonade — served with ice-cold irony. The lemons are bad national park reviews. And the lemonade is one of our favorite road-trip reads: Subpar Parks.

Point blank, Subpar Parks is a compilation of one-star reviews of the national parks laid over Share’s own gorgeous, original artwork of the park itself. No joke: It will have you laughing out loud. Which is why this book is equally at home on a coffee table, in the passenger seat, or on a bookshelf.

Quite frankly, I couldn’t get enough. So, let’s dive a little deeper into this wry, little RV read.

    The Comic Beauty of Understatement

Share’s formula started out on Instagram, making posters for America’s national parks. Her art showcased the wonder and beauty of the parks, highlighted by hilarious one-star reviews people had given them. My personal favorite is the review of Joshua Tree National Park, where apparently, “The only thing to do here is walk around the desert.” But there are so many good ones. Sequoia National Park? “There are bugs and they will bite you on the face.” Kenai Fjords National Park? Apparently it has a whale-corralling problem.

Small wonder, Share didn’t have to wait long to see a response. People not only loved her work. They wanted to buy the posters as prints. It is clear that Share obviously loves these parks — and the irony of her graphics is not missed. National park lovers (and comedy lovers) everywhere have become followers. And after creating so many graphics of national and state parks, Share decided to combine the two into a book.

    More Than Just Laughs

In her book Subpar Parks, Share strikes an expert balance between humor, information, and critique. Many of the reviews online, and even on Share’s personal website, focus only on her art and the reviews. So, I was completely unprepared for the depth of information she included inside. Her text is witty and casual, but it’s clear that she knows her stuff. She includes information about the parks’ histories, geography, attractions, and more. Each one gets equal attention with a title page, illustration, and tips divided into the regions each park occupies.

I greatly enjoyed this book. It’s funny, useful, and makes a great gift that travelers will actually appreciate. The minimal artwork is stunning and fits in well with official NPS designs, and supporting her is easy and affordable.

    Start Turning the Pages

As always, accessibility is key. While there is an audiobook version available, don’t kid yourself: This book is best enjoyed visually. For readers with low vision, I would recommend the electronic copy of the book so you can zoom in or adjust the brightness as needed. Subpar Parks would be a great read for groups or families, who could make a game out of writing their own “one star reviews” for their travels. (They could even plan trips based on their favorite posters.) Share also has a tear-out postcard version of the book called Subpar Parks Postcards for those who are wanting a coffee table book. (And she’s just released Subpar Planet for those craving more.)

Anyone who loves her artwork should head over to AmberShareDesign.com where she has each design featured in her books and more available as calendars, stickers, playing cards, and more. The enterprise is run by just her and her husband, so I would recommend giving orders plenty of time to process and ordering any gifts earlier than you think.

  • Whiskey, Neat … with a Murder Chaser: An RV Book Review

Whiskey, Neat … with a Murder Chaser: An RV Book Review

Behind the smiling face of America’s Best Coastal Small Town lies a twisted web of blackmail, drugs, and murder. Veteran Brady Sullivan gets far more than a quiet, unassuming place to process Army paychecks in Bryan W. Conway’s debut thriller Sandusky Burning. And it will take everything he’s got to keep his family, and his nation, safe.

    Fiction’s Crime-Ridden Campground

The story begins at the end, with the bound carcass of an RV screeching alongside the train it’s chained to. From there, Conway takes his time introducing several characters. In doing so, he gives us plenty of time to get to know what makes them tick. We get an inside look at everyone from Randy, an up-and-coming crime lord, to Mike, Brady’s new friend and battle buddy. Randy has everyone at his campground under his thumb. Then things take a dark turn when he sets his sights on Brady’s Top Secret security clearance. Mike and Brady soon find themselves knee-deep in Randy’s sinister operations. Together, both have to rely on their combined cunning and battle training to get them out alive.

In Sandusky Burning, Conway writes complex characters, the most notable of which are on Randy’s crew. Each one has unique motives and desires, but they’re controlled completely by Randy. A believable villain, I loved him the whole way through. With the bird’s eye view Conway presents to his readers, we know that Randy is a slimy opportunist. He gets just lucky enough to make Brady think he’s omniscient. I found myself gripping the pages, waiting anxiously to see how Brady was going to get himself out of each mess I knew was coming.

    Conway’s Gritty “NoirV” Style

Reminiscent of classic, hard-boiled detective stories, his book is not for the faint of heart. Conway promised a gritty crime thriller. And he delivered. Characters begin their days with “black coffee, sweetened with whiskey.” They end them “too deep in the bourbon for their own comfort.” Murder, drugs, prostitution, and suicide permeate the story, making it unsuitable for younger audiences. My household has taken to calling the novel a “NoirV” story, which accounts for many of its shortcomings.

The book is a decent size, and, due to the slower start, it can take a bit of time to get through. I had a difficult time finding a print copy in brick and mortar stores, but the Sandusky Burning is available online anywhere you buy ebooks. (For audiobook enjoyers, the audiobook is read by an AI voice, which I found rather jarring.) The writing itself could have done with some revision, namely Conway’s habits of writing certain characters as pure stereotypes and slipping into overly specific descriptions, but the plot is solid. He does a great job of orienting his reader within the lesser known aspects of post-military and RV life, as well as establishing the (very convoluted) campground setting.

Sandusky Burning Isn’t the End: A Sequel Awaits

Conway is living the dream, writing novels from his RV to yours. He has been a soldier, factory worker, fitness trainer, lawyer, and now an author. If you enjoy shows like Ozark and Yellowstone, then Sandusky Burning is for you. I’m not sure what comes next for Brady in the sequel, Sandusky Reckoning, but I know that regardless I’m excited to see what Bryan W. Conway comes up with next.

    Giant Jack-o’-Lantern

    Pumpkin RV by Duek Motorhomes

The classic symbol of Halloween — a pumpkin — comes to life with this creative RV makeover. The entire RV is transformed into a massive jack-o’-lantern, thanks to a full orange paint job. The RV’s sides are adorned with a grinning jack-o’-lantern face: triangle eyes and nose, and a big, toothy grin. On the roof, a green accent represents the pumpkin’s stem. It really adds the final touch to this festive transformation. It’s a larger-than-life pumpkin rolling down the road, spreading Halloween cheer wherever it goes!

The simplicity and charm of a pumpkin are hard to beat. (Especially when it’s on wheels!) This RV Halloween costume is perfect for family-friendly Halloween events or trips to pumpkin patches. It’s also ideal for spreading Halloween cheer to everyone on the road. Pumpkins are a Halloween staple. So, turning your RV into one is a guaranteed hit that works for any crowd, kids and adults alike.

If a full paint job isn’t feasible (it is a commitment!), you can try using orange string lights to outline your RV. Or add pumpkin decals to the windows, or paint cardboard cutouts to create a jack-o’-lantern face. You can also add artificial vines or greenery to represent the stem, giving your RV a cozy pumpkin patch feel without too much effort. This idea is simple, versatile, and can be as elaborate or low-key as you like, making it perfect for DIY enthusiasts of all levels.

    Haunted Pirate Ship

Ghost Pirate RV by Ventura Beach RV Resort

Set sail on a Halloween adventure with a pirate-themed RV transformation! This RV has been completely outfitted to look like a pirate ship. Wooden pallets and netting drape across the front, giving the appearance of a ship’s bow cutting through the waves. A skeleton with a hat and tattered clothing stands at the helm with a parrot on its shoulder. (Which, you know, adds authenticity to this spooky seafaring vessel.) The red and white striped sails further enhance the look. Make no mistake: This is no land yacht, but a buccaneer ship ready for the high seas.

Pirates are a beloved part of Halloween culture. Maybe it’s because they blend adventure with a hint of danger – a theme perfect for those who love swashbuckling fun. EIther way, this is an interactive and impressive setup that will turn heads, whether you’re parked at a campground or joining a Halloween parade. Plus, the skeleton crew brings just the right amount of spookiness for the season.

To achieve a pirate-themed look, start with key decorations like Jolly Roger flags, faux treasure chests, and netting to drape over your RV. If you want to go all out, consider adding a fog machine. An eerie “sea mist” is definitely a welcome effect. Then, dress up as the captain, take the helm of your pirate ship, and make it a Halloween attraction all on its own.

    Decked in Cobwebs

Halloween Cobweb Decor by Argosy Odyssey

This RV setup leans into the cozy-yet-spooky ambiance of Halloween. While some there’s some decor you can drive with, this isn’t it. Rather, this theme is all about the campsite. Surrounded by red and yellow string lights, the RV is decked out with large spider webs draped across the windows and exterior, with black spiders dangling from the webs. A bat hovers above, while pumpkins and small Halloween-themed decorations enhance the setup’s festive feel. The backdrop of a rustic campsite adds to the atmosphere, making this RV look ready for a Halloween party.

This RV Halloween costume is less about scares and more about creating a Halloween vibe perfect for all ages. The spider webs and lights give it a warm yet eerie glow. So, it’s ideal for cozy Halloween gatherings around the campfire. This look is great for RVers who want to incorporate classic Halloween imagery into an inviting festive setting.

Use colorful LED string lights and drape spider webs across your RV’s exterior to create a similar ambiance. Add plastic spiders, bats, or other creepy crawlers for a subtle scare factor. Pumpkins, real and faux, can add a classic Halloween touch, while battery-powered lanterns or string lights can transform the space after dark with light and shadow.

    Monster Marauder

    Monster RV by Go RVing

Turn your RV into a menacing monster! This eerie setup features glowing eyes on the windshield and a set of jagged white teeth on the front grille, making it look like a lurking creature. With glowing eyes and a toothy grin, this RV could come alive at any moment, making it the perfect Halloween scare for anyone who crosses its path.

There’s something about a monster theme that taps into classic Halloween nostalgia. This RV design is perfect for a bold, scary, memorable Halloween setup. It’s a thrilling holiday celebration, especially for nighttime events where the glowing eyes stand out.

Try using glow-in-the-dark paint or LED lights to create piercing monster eyes for a similar effect. Large vinyl decals can add fangs, claws, or other monstrous features to give your RV a fearsome face that will make an impact, whether you’re parked or on the move.

    Giant Spider Takeover

Giant Spider RV by Landon Troy McAfee

Arachnophobes look away! This RV looks like giant spiders have taken over! Large, realistic-looking black spiders are scattered across the exterior, creating a chilling effect as if the RV is crawling with oversized arachnids. Small pumpkins and other decorations around the RV add to the Halloween spirit, while the wooded backdrop lends an additional eerie touch. It’s a wonderful setup for creating a spine-tingling Halloween display without too much fuss.

Spiders are naturally creepy, making them a classic Halloween theme. This setup is easy to assemble but still makes a big impact, especially when the RV is parked in a natural setting. It’s a fun yet spine-chilling display ideal for outdoor Halloween events and camping trips.

Large spider decorations can be found in most Halloween stores, or you can make your own from foam and paint. Add some fake spider webs around the RV to enhance the theme, and place pumpkins around for extra Halloween spirit. It’s a quick, easy way to turn your RV into a spooky sight that will impress.

    Cinderella Carriage

Cinderella RV by Tara’s Tiny Trailer

This Cinderella-inspired RV is a magical sight for those who prefer fantasy over fright. This RV is lined with lights to resemble a fairy-tale carriage with glowing “wheels.” Fog effects enhance the enchanted atmosphere, making this setup look like it came straight out of a storybook. It’s an imaginative and whimsical approach to RV Halloween costumes. It’s perfect for kids and families who may want to opt for a magical experience (versus, you know, horror).

This theme brings a touch of storybook magic to Halloween. It’s an enchanting setup perfect for families with young children or anyone who loves fantasy. This fairy-tale-themed RV is a delightful way to celebrate Halloween without the spook factor.

String lights or LED strips can be used to outline your RV and create carriage-like wheels to recreate this look. Add fairy tale elements such as ivy, faux flowers, or glitter for a whimsical touch. Dress up as a fairy-tale character to complete the look and consider adding a fog machine for that extra magical feel.

What Will Your RV Dress Up as This Year?

These RV Halloween costumes show just how creative you can get when Halloween rolls around. Whether parked at a campsite, attending a local Halloween event, or just taking a spooky road trip, a decked-out RV is a surefire way to celebrate the season. Halloween is a time for creativity and fun, so why not bring that to your RV lifestyle?
