What Is an RV Rally — and How Do I Attend One?

“What is an RV rally?” you ask. You might as well ask, “What do people like to eat for dinner?” RV rallies come in many, many different sizes and types, with a broad variety of audiences and aims. But here’s the short answer: It’s when a group of people come together to celebrate the joy of RVing.

But just like at a buffet restaurant, there’s no way you can sample them all in one go. So how do you pick the ones that are right for you? Here’s how you navigate the smorgasbord of available events.

    It’s the People

Let’s start with what I think is the most important reason to attend a rally: It’s the people that make it fun. I’ve been to a lot of rallies and it’s been true every single time. No matter what other factors are part of the rally, know that you will have things in common with everybody else who’s there. You’re all RVers!

So if there is ever a lull in the conversation — and there never is — you can always ask people what their favorite destination is, their favorite place to camp, why they chose the RV they did, where they recommend going, or even what the biggest mishap is that they’ve had on their RV adventure.

You’ll be making new friends every rally you go to. But also, the more rallies and events you attend, the more you run into the same people — and where better to catch up on their latest travels? Even when you’re out “in the wild,” it’s incredible how often you will spot a familiar face from a rally.

    How RV Rallies Come Together

There are a number of reasons rallies are held. Larger ones will have something for everyone, while others might cater to a narrow niche. You’ll find ones for specific RV brands or models, or broader categories like travel trailers or bus conversions. Some focus on a particular lifestyle, such as the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous where thousands of people who live a nomadic lifestyle gather in the desert. They can be held by clubs, groups, manufacturers, businesses, or even religious organizations.

What Happens at an RV Rally?

No two rallies are the same, but you’ll generally find vendors, new RVs, and seminars, depending on the size and focus of the rally. Here are the most common elements we’ve found.

    Vendors

The vendors are a big highlight for my wife and I. I can’t tell you how many things we’ve seen that are essentials — or just seemed like it at the time — that we absolutely had to have. You’ll find useful gadgets, upgrades, and much more.

    New RVs

Many of the rallies we’ve attended have a lot of new RVs. In fact, a recent rally we went to may have been our most expensive trip yet: we are considering an RV we saw there. Talk about vendors!

    Seminars

It’s not all shopping at a rally! I’ve attended workshops and seminars from companies like Lippert, Dexter Axle, and Coleman-Mach to learn more about the components in my own RV. I can now adjust slide rooms and re-pack wheel bearings and adjust brakes thanks to things I’ve learned at rallies. We’ve taught a lot of seminars at various rallies and will do so again at the forthcoming Family RV Association rally in Perry, Georgia, in March 2025.

    Factory Technicians

Rallies held by manufacturers often have the draw of having factory service technicians on hand to perform work on RVs there. For example, the Forest River Owners’ Group rally has factory teams on site and they’ll do up to three warranty items while you’re there. Grand Design, Alliance, Winnebago, and many other brands hold similar events.

    Group Meals

Many rallies have big group meals that are either provided as part of the entry fee, and some also have potlucks. Some have both. Beyond the food, it provides an excellent opportunity to sit down with old friend and new faces alike.

    Excursions

Some rallies will feature excursions where you and a group of others venture out to a specific destination, activity, or event. In fact, as I write this, I am at FROGtoberfest in Amana, Iowa, where there is a big Oktoberfest celebration going on.

Where Do You Find These Rallies?

There are a lot of organizations that put on rallies and the more you go to the more you’ll find. But one of our favorites is the Family RV Association, formerly known as the FMCA. These rallies are open to RVers of all types and there are both major national rallies that attract well over 1,000 RVs to smaller regional events.

The Family RV Association also has local chapters as well as special interest chapters. For example, I love trains so I’m in the Golden Spike Chapter. But I’m also in a chapter of people — called the Frustrated Maestros — who show up to these conventions and play music.

Escapees is another big organization that puts on rallies and, like the Family RV Association, has a wide number of local chapters as well as chapters with specific interests called Birds of a Feather or BOF.

The regional chapters of any of these organizations are worth seeking out as you’ll find people who are in your neck of the woods and can help point you in the direction of larger things and events.

Your RV’s manufacturer may also have an organization that does rallies. For example, I own a Forest River Rockwood Mini Lite and Forest River has the Forest River Owners’ Group, or FROG. And, like Jeep owners, we do put plastic frogs on each other’s RVs. It’s silly but it’s also fun.

So What Is an RV Rally?

If you’re planning to attend your first RV rally — congratulations! You’ll meet a whole community of fellow RVers who love to travel and explore, and who will form a part of the fabric of your life on the road. Simply put, an RV rally is when a group of RVers come together to celebrate their shared interest and to make the RV experience ever better. And, it’s a great way to make your RV lifestyle even more enjoyable.

It’s an annual tradition for thousands of RV enthusiasts to make their way to Hershey, Pennsylvania, for America’s Largest RV Show, anxious to check out the newest offerings from RV manufacturers, dealers, and other suppliers. The 2022 show is being held September 14th through the 18th, and dealers will be bringing their A-game to attract shoppers. Here’s how one dealership plans to excite buyers at the Hershey RV Show:

RV One Superstores, part of the family of dealerships in the RV Retailer group, will follow up a strong 2021 show and be in full force at the Hershey RV Show this year, hosting displays in multiple spaces throughout the show. Their Entegra Motorhome display will be available in space E1, Newmar rigs in space E6, Aurora RVs in A1, Zinger and Redwood brands in F6, and Twilight RVs in F7. • RV Complete VIP membership with every RV purchase
    • Special RV show interest rates for buyers
    • Top dollar trade-in values
    • Price Lock Guarantee on all new units ordered at the Hershey RV Show

Here’s a closer look at just a few of these special incentives:

A Chance to Win a Free RV

During the length of the Hershey RV Show, everyone has the chance to win a free RV. This year, RV One is giving away a 2022 Geneva Class C motorhome from THOR. Be sure to enter to win the Geneva Class C motorhome.

    RV One Price Lock Guarantee

Sometimes a dealer will give you an initial quote, but when it’s time to pay, they cite higher material costs, fuel costs, delivery expense, and rising labor costs to justify a higher final price. These can be valid claims, but it can be difficult for RV consumers to understand or afford. That’s why RV One offers a Price Lock Guarantee, a commitment to buyers that they will lock in your price, even if it goes up between order date and delivery date.

    Trade-In Top Dollar

Anyone can say they will give you top dollar for your RV trade-in, but this dealership can actually deliver. Because RV One’s network covers such a vast market, almost every RV is in-demand somewhere at any given time, which means they can deliver on giving you top dollar for your RV trade-in. This larger reach gives RV One the ability to view your trade-in value within a broader market picture, giving you the best value possible.

RV Complete VIP Membership With Every RV Purchase

Every customer who purchases an RV from RV One will receive an RV Complete VIP Membership, which provides exclusive protection for their RV. The all-inclusive benefits can be accessed through a mobile app on your smartphone and include:

    • Roadside assistance
    • Technical assistance
    • Windshield repair
    • Lockout assistance
    • Paintless dent repair

    It also lets you:

    • Schedule maintenance on your RV
    • Contact the dealership with questions
    • Find campgrounds, RV parks, and RV resorts
    • Access the RV LIFE Pro suite of tools

Everyone is thrilled to be making their way to the Hershey RV Show, and RV One is planning on making a big splash as well. Be sure to stop by, meet the team, and learn more about how you can find your next RV.

  • 5 Upcoming 2022 Musical Festivals Where You Can RV/Camp

5 Upcoming 2022 Musical Festivals Where You Can RV/Camp

There’s nothing quite like singing and dancing to your favorite performers day and night. Music festivals bring tons of acts to one venue, often in large outdoor spaces. Add some convenience to your music festival experience by traveling and staying in your RV during these multi-day concerts. If you love live music, RV Trader has put together a list of five upcoming 2022 music festivals where you can RV/camp to help you plan your next getaway.

    1. Coachella

April 15–17 and 22–24, Indio, California

Coachella is a music and arts festival that takes place over two weekends in California’s Colorado Desert. This year’s headliners include Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Kanye West.

While Coachella does allow on-site car or van camping, motorhomes and other RVs with a shower, sink, toilet, or stove inside or attached are not permitted on the grounds. Only passenger cars, trucks, and vans are allowed. Fortunately, the Coachella Valley has a number of RV parks and campgrounds within 10 miles of the festival.

Coachella also offers on-site tent camping on a large, grassy field that’s free of vehicle traffic, as well as luxury camping options.

    2. Electric Daisy Carnival

    May 20–22, Las Vegas, Nevada

Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) is the largest electronic dance music festival in North America. The flagship event is held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and will feature more than 300 house, techno, hip hop, and EDM performers and DJs over the weekend.

EDC offers four-night camping passes for tents and RVs, which includes power hookups, water refills and pump-outs for an extra fee. The festival can accommodate Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes, ranging from 19–45 feet.

    3. Hangout Music Fest

    May 20–22, Gulf Shores, Alabama

Hangout Music Festival is a three-day music festival held on the sandy beaches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Post Malone, Fall Out Boy, Doja Cat, Tame Impala, and Megan Thee Stallion are set to headline the festival.

While there aren’t camping options available on the beaches where performances will take place, the Gulf Shores’ seven-mile-long island does have accommodations for RVs and campers. In fact, Gulf State Park Campground is on Hangout Music Festival’s shuttle route for convenient pick up and drop off.

    4. Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival

    June 16–19, Manchester, Tennessee

Bonnaroo, which means “good stuff” in Creole slang, is a four-day festival that takes place on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. This year’s festival will feature performances by J. Cole, The Chicks, 21 Savage, Stevie Nicks, Machine Gun Kelly, and Roddy Rich.

For non-stop fun at Bonnaroo, book one of the camping experiences. The festival boasts both VIP and Platinum Campgrounds, featuring private amenities, convenient access to the performance areas, and more.

Bonnaroo also offers parking accommodations for Class A, Class B, or Class C motorhomes, along with fifth wheels or other towable campers. VIP accommodations for RV camping grant access to premiere parking and power hookups, while Premiere pass holders also have water and waste hookups.

    5. Firefly Music Festival

    Sept. 22–25, Dover, Delaware

Firefly Music Festival will bring headliners, including Halsey, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, and Dua Lipa, to The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway. Tent camping, glamping, and RV camping are welcome at different sites across the 105-acre venue.

The Front Row RV Camping pass lets you park your camper right across from the festival entrance. You can upgrade to the Infield RV Camping pass for access to power, water, and waste hookups. Both of these experiences can accommodate an RV in a 25-by-45-foot parking spot, as well as a tow vehicle.

These five upcoming 2022 music festivals feature popular performers from an array of genres. You might even be tempted to hop in your RV and roadtrip to all of them! While all music festivals can’t accommodate motorhomes and travel trailers, these venues are typically located near campgrounds and RV parks, putting you close to all the action.
